Spartan Hockey Club
Code of Conduct Policy
INTRODUCTION
This policy sets forth the basic expectations of the SPARTAN HOCKEY CLUB regarding conduct
for players and parents/relatives/spectators. The fundamental goal underlying these policies is to
create an atmosphere suitable for high school hockey. Anyone with questions about these policies
should direct them to one of the two Rules and Ethics Directors of the organization.
PLAYER CONDUCT
Players are expected to conduct themselves in a respectful and responsible manner at practices,
games, all tournaments and any team-related functions. Poor conduct deemed to not be in the
best interest of the SPARTAN organization and its teams is a violation of this Code.
On the Ice –
Unsportsmanlike conduct (i.e. trash talking; swearing; disrespecting the referees,
opposing team or your own teammates) or the intent to injure another player (kicking, slashing,
checking from behind, high sticking, etc.) will not be tolerated. Any violation of the USA
Hockey/AHAI Zero Tolerance Policy, or the Zero-Tolerance Policies of any league in which the
SPARTAN HOCKEY CLUB is a member will be strictly enforced. Any player who is subject to a
game misconduct penalty will be evaluated for up to an additional one game suspension in addition to the
discipline from the contest from which he was removed. Players who are repeat violators or argue with officials or
coaches upon being removed from a game will be subject to additional suspension day(s)
beyond the contest in which they were removed. All conduct which results in a player
being removed from a game will result in an investigation by the Rules and Ethics Directors of the
club. Consequences for egregious or injurious conduct may include removal from the club and
referral to the AHAI Rules and Ethics Committee.
Off the Ice –
High school hockey provides players with the opportunity to participate in a
remarkable sport, learn life skills, and develop friendships which will extend well beyond high
school. Players are representatives of the club in locker rooms, corridors, lobbies, parking lots
and at other team activities. Players also represent the club at their school. Players are expected
to show the highest level of respect to their teammates, officials, opponents and
spectators. Under no circumstances will a player display disrespect of a verbal or physical nature
towards a coach or league official when said coach or official gives a player verbal direction
regarding inappropriate behavior. Player conduct which violates this standards of conduct or
takes away from the team will result in an investigation by the Rules and Ethics Directors.
Consequences for such violations may range from a warning to removal from the club and referral
to the AHAI Rules and Ethics Committee.
Locker Conduct -
1. No pushing, shoving, running or chasing anyone. No boxing. No snapping of towels at individuals in the locker room.
2. Show respect to others at ALL times. No Ethnic, Racial, Sexual Comments or Behavior. No Disrespectful Comments, Bullying, or Hazing.
3. Keep the locker room clean. Discard all trash in trash cans and leave the locker room cleaner than when you arrived.
4. Do not use the shower as a toilet.
5. Do not take items that do not belong to you. If it appears an item has been left behind, give it to a coach so they can try to return it to the owner. The team is not responsible for lost items.
6. LISTEN - Pay attention when you're addressed individually or as a group.
7. Cell phones are to remain in your personal bag at all times. Locker rooms are for changing - not taking pictures or video. Players who take pictures or video in the locker room are subject to suspension or termination from SHC.
8. Players/Guardians will be held personally responsible for the destruction of any property.
9. Report any injuries or lost items to your coach.
PARENTAL/RELATIVE/SPECTATOR CONDUCT
Parents and guardians play a vital role in supporting their athletes and the club. It is expected
that parents and other relatives or supporters of the club conduct themselves in a manner that is
appropriate for interscholastic athletics. Parents are reminded that they have no absolute right to
participate in club activities or attend games if their conduct takes away from the development of
the team or the experience for others.
Among those expectations for parents, relatives or spectators are the following:
• Parents/relatives/spectators will conduct themselves in a manner which exemplifies good
sportsmanship
• Parents/relatives/spectators will be supportive of all team players and coaches both on
and off the ice.
• Parents are encouraged to surface concerns in a suitable manner. Parents are encouraged
to contact their coach or a SPARTAN HOCKEY CLUB Board Member if a problem exists
on their team.
• Parents are encouraged to allow their athletes the opportunity to practice and play in
games without criticism of coaches and other players before or after club events. They
also are encouraged to provide coaches space to work with our players—particularly
during practices.
• Parents/relatives/spectators will refrain from the use or profane or offense language at
games and team activities—particularly around minors.
• Parents/relatives/spectators will refrain from derisive or derogatory comments about
players, coaches, referees, and club or league officials in person or via electronic
communication.
• Parents are expected to wait 24 hours to contact coaches on concerns following a game to
allow all parties the opportunity to reflect upon and process the contest.
• Parents/relatives/spectators will refrain from engaging in any physical altercation. Any
physical altercation or unwanted physical contact with another will result in a thorough
investigation and may result in extended suspension penalties or exclusion from all
activities of the SPARTAN HOCKEY CLUB for life, referral to law enforcement officials
and referral to the AHAI Rules and Ethics Committee.
By way of this policy, parents/relatives/spectators are notified that their conduct at games and
practices is a reflection on the SPARTAN HOCKEY CLUB. Behavior which detracts from the
mission of the club or violates established standards of conduct will not be
tolerated. Parents/relatives/spectators who violate these standards of conduct will be subject to a
review by the SPARTAN HOCKEY CLUB Rules and Ethics Directors.
Parents/relatives/spectators who are removed from a game will be assessed a MINIMUM
suspension of three additional games from AHAI and must appear in front of the Board of Directors
for a hearing to be assessed for additional suspension of games.
Parents who are removed multiple times in a season are subject to consequences including
removal from all club activities. Parents/relatives/spectators who are deemed to violate the
standards of conduct in any other matters will be subject to review and consequences ranging
from a warning to permanent removal from all SPARTAN HOCKEY CLUB games and activities
along with referral to the AHAI Rules and Ethics Committee.
